ASIAN HERITAGE SOCIETY AWARD GIVEN TO AKIKO BOURLAND:
The Asian Heritage Society has awarded Akiko Bourland, grandmaster in the Ohara School of Ikebana, and president of the Ohara Ikebana Society of San Diego,  its 2012 Asian Heritage Award in Art and Literature. The selection by the Asian Heritage Awards Nominating Committee was unanimous.
                                             
The committee stated that Ms. Bourland's "... tireless energy and dedication in introducing hundreds of students to the joys and beauty of Ikebana have been exemplary in fashioning and enriching the cultural ties between the people of Japan and San Diego. We commend you for tireless dedication to your craft and your devotion to beauty as the lifeblood of art." 
                                        
The award will be presented at the Ninth Annual Asian Heritage Awards event on 15 September 2012 at the Marriott Marquis and Marina on W. Harbor Drive, San Diego.

Members of the Asian Heritage Awards Nominating Committee were Dr. Binh Tran (chairperson), Professor Jaye Van Kirk, Dr. Otto Lee, Regina Ip, Gloria Tierney, Dr. Alan Gin, Sally Wong-Avery, Jerrilyn Malana, Rosanna Harrison, and Leonard Novarro.

AKIKO BOURLAND'S BOSTON VISIT :
At the invitation of the Boston Chapter of Ikebana International (chapter 17), Akiko Bourland, president of the Ohara Ikebana Society of San Diego and Ohara grandmaster, traveled to Boston where she demonstrated several Ohara styles and did two workshops. The demonstrations were on 17 April 2012 and included rising, inclining, free-style, heika, rimpa, and landscape arrangements. Ms. Bourland also did two workshops on 18 April 2012. One workshop featured heika, and the second workshop featured rimpa . Mrs. Bourland was honored when board members, I.I. chapter members, and Ohara school members were invited to a special dinner at the residence of the Consul General of Japan in Boston, the Honorable Takeshi Hikihara, and Mrs. Hikihara. Both the Consul General and Mrs. Hikihara also attended the demonstrations.

AKIKO BOURLAND HONORED:
For her work in improving and expanding cultural ties between the people of Japan, San Diego, and Tijuana, Akiko Bourland, grandmaster of the Ohara School of Ikebana, was awarded the Phillips Community Award by the Japan Society of San Diego and Tijuana . The award was presented on 26 January 2012 at the Japan Society's 18th Annual Leadership Awards Gala. The ceremony was held at the San Diego Marriott Del Mar.

Ms. Bourland is known throughout the community as an
An excellent teacher with many devoted students who has taught for more than 38 years
The author of the book, Ikebana: Harmony Through Flowers
The artist who presented a One-Woman Ikebana Exhibition

She is also known for her generosity in providing floral arrangements, conducting workshops, and giving demonstrations.
